Manitoba HIV/AIDS Stats from 1985 to 2004
985 HIV positive cases from 1985 to 2002
2003 - 110 cases 2004 - 109 cases These two years represent the highest incident numbers of cases in Manitoba to date.
- The rate of HIV in Manitoba has increased 53% over the last five years.
In 2005:
- Up to Oct 05 (i.e. in the first ten months of 2005) - 98 new cases of HIV were reported (compared to 86 in the first ten months of 2004) all indications are that this year will have more cases of HIV in Manitoba than ever.
Ethnicity:
- 27% of new HIV cases diagnosed in 2004 were among Manitobans who self-identified as Aboriginal (29 cases). 20% self-identified as African (22 cases). 30% were unknown or missing ethnicity.
2004 Transmission Patterns:
- 44 females tested positive. Modes of transmission were:
- Having lived in an HIV endemic country (25%, 11 cases)
- Sex with men who are at increased risk of HIV (16%, 7 cases)
- 65 males tested positive. Modes of transmission:
- Men who have sex with men (32%, 21 cases)
- Sex with females who are at increased risk of HIV (17%, 11 cases)
- MSM, IDU and heterosexual activity with persons at increased risk for HIV represent 90% of all HIV positive tests.
- Number of people reporting having lived in an endemic country as a risk factor has tripled since 1999 (6%) to 2004 (19%).
Chlamydia:
- Manitoba has second highest rate of chlamydia in Canada (second to Saskatchewan). In 2003: 315.6/100,000 cases (n=3,640).
- Provincial STD strategy has set a goal of 95/100,000 cases by 2010.
Syphillis:
- Prior to 1999 syphillis was rare in Manitoba - no reported cases of syphilis in 1999, 2000 = 1 case, 2001 = 1 case.
- In 2003 Winnipeg had 41 cases of syphilis.
- Up to September 2005 - 63 cases.
